THE SPIRITED MAN
Richard Francisburton was born in england in 1821. His father was a
military man and travaled throughout
europa with his young son. When richard was old enough, he went to
oxford university. The school kicked him out because he was always fighting.
Richard joined the army when he was 21.
The army sent richard to sind, pakistan. There he develoved an
interest in languangesand learned several of the local dialects aswell as
Arabic, Irian and hindustani. While on leave, he disguised himselfas a moslem
and traveled to Medina and Mecca in1853. He was the first westerner to make the
Haj pilgramage.
In 1854, Richard left the army and sind to travel with John Speck.
They were uying to find the source of the nile and they did. They were the first
white men to explore eastern Africa. He
then took a trip to Crimea ( Rusia) and then back to south-east Africa.
In 1856, Richard went to th American ‘wild’ west and helped kit Carson fight the
Indians there. He good merried in 1861 and moved to benin (West Africa) to explore the gold coast.
Later that same year, he took a diplomatic post in Brazil. After exploring most
of south America, he want to Damascus, Syiria; to Trieste, Italy; to Iceland;
to sind again and back to the Gold Coast. He finally died in Trieste at 69
years old.
During
his life, Sir Richard Burton spoke 20 languages and published 50 books
(including the 17 volume, first translation of A THOUSAND AND ONE ARABIAN
NIGHTS). He was the first white man to go to Mecca; the first to go up the Nile
and the first to go up the Amazon. I believe you could define spirited by
telling Richard’s story.
